When I want to get a better handle on my life, one of the first things I do is clean out my closet. Sometimes it just needs a little tidying up. But other times it needs to be a total reworking.
To bring calm
To ignite hope
To reclaim control
To increase joy
Often, the simplest transformation in our physical world has the capacity to profoundly transform our spirit and our soul.
The same principle applies when it comes to the practice of cherishing motherhood. It’s easy to let our calling overwhelm and get the best of us. Stuffing things and not really processing and organizing leaves us frazzled and complaining. Precious moments gifted are so easily eclipsed by the urgency of all that now claims. And both patience and control slip through our fingers like sand. Leaving us tired, stressed and defeated.
We are not at our best during these times, and settling for less is never part of God’s plan for any of us, even mothers. These are the times to consider cleaning out our mom closet…starting with 5 easy fixes to point us toward cherishing this magnificent calling instead of finding ourselves caught between chaos and complaining.
Declutter and Let Go
This helps us identify the things we’ve been stashing and tossing into our closet that are blocking the most cherished parts of motherhood. The things that are taking up valuable space and squeezing out what’s most important to us. Sometimes our decluttering means taking the time to mine deeply and exercise an honest evaluation of all that we are hanging onto and why.
What’s hindering us from finding joy in our daily calling? What’s taking the place of joy and contentment? Is it busyness and running crazy? Is it trying to be perfect? Is it trying to Be and Do everything? What do we stand to gain by letting go of those things that continue to claim our attention and our efforts? Learning to let go of the unimportant clears space for all that is vital to both gratitude and cherishing. It’s not easy to let go, but the reward is a greater clarity of purpose and a much more easily attained sense of joy.
Our motherhood roles are continually changing. Yet often we keep the closet of our heart filled with the old things we used to wear instead of embracing the new space that change and growth bring. What hats are we still trying to wear that really don’t fit any longer? Why do we try to squeeze into these spaces of motherhood?
Sometimes it’s comparison, guilt or people pleasing. Are we trying to fit into what is really meant for someone else? Does it reflect our personality or aspirations as a mom? One of the fastest ways to lose sight of the beauty of motherhood is in trying to fit into someone else’s concept of what we should be. Eliminating all that no longer fits helps us become more comfortable in our own skin, and this translates to how we operate and move through motherhood in all areas. Our sense of peace with ourselves and our calling will then continue to motivate us toward appreciating the uniqueness of OUR calling.
Replenish the Essentials
I don’t know about you, but one of the most difficult things for me is to keep my closet replenished with the most essential parts of a wardrobe. The same holds true for our mom closet if we aren’t intentionally replenishing the most essential things that bring meaning and happiness to our calling. When we have the essentials, we always have something to draw from. We’re less likely to be left unprepared, and simplicity takes center stage, giving us more control and joy in any moment.
If we take the time to determine what our essentials are in simple things such as starting our day or ending our day, these essentials begin to serve as a supportive framework that we operate from. It’s all about building a strong framework and sticking to it. Knowing we have our essentials in place brings peace and assurance that regardless of what goes on around us, we know what is important and how to stay the course with a sense of control.
Rearrange and Prioritize
Rearranging our closet to prioritize is an opportunity to energize and keep hope alive every day. By placing the best and brightest parts of our life in the forefront or the place of easiest access, we set ourselves up for keeping our confidence and our momentum as we deal with daily stresses and unexpected challenges. Our children see this also, and the positive domino effect on all involved continues to grow and confirm our path of strength and mom character. It’s all about observing what gets us excited about motherhood and choosing to make this a focal point to draw from in keeping our momentum.
Just like a beautifully organized closet, when we open the door to motherhood each day, the first thing we should be able to see is what’s needed for that day and how we are going to accomplish getting there. When our mom closet is orderly and our priorities are in place, clear thinking and excitement for our calling both are the prevailing mindset to take us where we need to go.
Refresh and Reflect.
Every physical space needs to be refreshed, including the spaces of our mom closet. Refreshing doesn’t have to be costly or dramatic, but it does need to reflect what brings us joy and fulfillment as a mom. Similar to how accessories refresh a our closet space, it’s important for us to invest in those activities and hobbies that refresh and restore balance to our soul. Refreshing can be choosing simple pleasures that help our soul breathe and our mind clear. When we take the time to refresh ourselves, we create a beautiful and vibrant path for cherishing and reflecting on all the parts of our motherhood calling.
Spring is right around the corner, and this is as good a time as any to make plans for how we are going to clean out our mom closet and get ourselves undusted, organized and in control of our stuff. So we can move confidently through this gift we’ve been entrusted with.
Our children need to know that we not only cherish them, but we also cherish motherhood for the gift that it is.Your MOM CLOSET needs to be a place of joy and celebration of who you are now; not who you were. Click To Tweet
