How many times have you said to yourself or to someone else, “I’m just a mom?” How many times have you un-intentionally devalued your role in light of someone else’s seemingly more important job? How many times have you disqualified yourself as a good mom when faced with another’s apparent success?
And how many times have you found yourself longing for something a bit more exciting and rewarding?
It’s OK to be honest. Because the truth is always the best starting point. It’s Ok to admit that “The World’s Greatest Mom” banner might look better hanging above someone else’s door. And it’s Ok to confess that we really don’t have it all figured out.
But when these become labels which define us and hinder us from cherishing the gift of motherhood, it’s time to do a little soul-searching.
If you’ve gone through the series on legacy building, you’ve experienced one aspect of my life’s passion. But there’s also another which goes hand in hand, and it’s that of cherishing motherhood. Like you, it’s something I’ve poured myself into. And I know what it’s like to ask myself these same questions during those all too familiar less than moments.
When doubting our mom abilities shifts to doubting our mom significance.
When today’s unmet expectations obscure the possibilities of tomorrow’s successes.
When the pressure of perfect overshadows the beauty of authentic.
When the self-imposed guilt swallows up all the goodness we’ve created.
Learning to cherish motherhood doesn’t come with giving birth. It’s something we have to nurture and protect within ourselves with the same determination we nurture and protect our children.
Cherishing motherhood begins with the commitment to nurture and protect our inner selves. There are times when we need to wipe away the dust and cobwebs which have collected in our thought patterns and do a little re-imaging to repair our negative thoughts and emotions. To bring a new perspective and freshness to the forefront.
Learning to truly cherish motherhood often means slowing down and figuring out what makes us most effective and successful. What makes us unique and qualified, because this will be not only our place of strength but also our place of grace – for us and for our children.
I invite you to join me for the next 4 weeks as we explore how to move beyond all the doing and balancing of motherhood. Let’s learn to cherish motherhood with the same heart that cherishes the ones we mother.
Join me as we dig a little deeper to identify those hindrances that keep us stuck and trip us up along the way of cherishing our calling.
Together, we’ll dedicate some time cleaning out the corrupt files and patterns of thinking that direct us away from gratitude. We’ll learn how important operating within our strengths is to keeping us grounded in optimism and success. We’ll cultivate anticipation for tomorrow by using big-picture thinking to keep us centered in hope.
