How hungry are you to reach your goal? Does the desire gnaw at your insides? Does it growl and send you internal signals that you are not fully satisfied yet? Does it remind you that it needs to be fed?
Entertaining a desire or dream is normal. Feeling excitement at the possibilities of achieving is energizing and invigorating and just plain fun. But allowing ourselves to stay hungry through the ups and downs is crucial because if we don’t stay hungry, we risk losing sight of the finish line.
When the journey gets difficult and your momentum slows down, do you find ways to stifle your hunger or ignore it because you just don’t know how you are going to make it for the long haul? Or does the hunger become so unbearable that you find it confusing to know which direction to go next?
Keeping the finish line in full view means finding ways to stay hungry.
The more we feed our goal, the more passion we burn. And the more we allow our passion to burn, the closer we get to our achieving our goal.
So what can we do to stay hungry?
Talk about the goal. Don’t be shy. The more we share our goal, the more confidence we build. The more we hear ourselves speak our goal, the less authority doubt has over our thoughts. Talking about our goal brings it to life and keeps the excitement and possibilities alive. Our goals remain in a place of importance, and when we allow them to be important, they cannot be silenced.
Build connections. It’s true…one is the loneliest number, especially when it comes to reaching our goals. We can’t do it alone. And who really wants to? Finding people who share our goal is vital to staying hungry. Together, we lighten burdens, inspire motivation, offer insight to overcome obstacles and sharpen each other’s skills. The finish line is so much sweeter when we choose to cross with others who share our passion.
Think Like a Student. When we remain teachable, we set ourselves up for success. Likewise, when we think we have learned all there is to know, we risk loosing our cutting edge. No matter what the goal, there are always new avenues to explore, more knowledge to accrue and exciting methods to master for getting across the finish line. Staying hungry requires that we continue to have an adventurous and exploratory mindset, always willing to think outside of the box and stay aware of all that is relevant.
Learn to be uncomfortable. It is uncomfortable to be hungry. But staying hungry calls for action. And not just any action. Staying hungry calls for the kind of action that pushes us outside of our comfort zone. Journeying outside of our comfort zone helps us see possibilities we may not have been able to consider before. Pushing our limits and taking chances clears away the cobwebs and dust so we can gain fresh perspectives, especially during the challenges. Choosing to be uncomfortable is choosing to grow, so when we cross the finish line, we are a changed person.

Give more than we take. Learning to give more than we take is learning to settle for more. We stay energized and motivated in our passion when we choose to be generous along the way. Generosity gives birth to fulfillment, which is crucial to staying the course through all the hard work and energy it takes to accomplish our goal. Never underestimate the power of giving.
If you find yourself lacking in motivation even though you are showing up and consistently putting forth effort, you may just need to take a look at how satisfied you’ve become. If you’re in a rut, tap into your hunger long enough to feel it and work within the growling. This may be where you find your greatest satisfaction and motivation to stay the course!
