How comfortable are you with spontaneity?
If I answer this question truthfully, I would have to admit that although I’m not usually uncomfortable with being spontaneous, I don’t make it a priority. Instead, my tendency is to plan out my day and remain flexible in how I get things done.
I love having fun, trying new things, exploring and adventures. But I’m not good at making space for spontaneity. So, summer has always represented a perfect block of time to step back, let go and embrace things as they come. And I’m feeling the call to dive into as many spontaneous moments as possible this summer.
To invite impulse. To welcome diversions. To wander down a different path.
How about you?
I know it’s not always easy, especially when life doesn’t slow down and timelines are looming in the distance. I’m rarely without timelines, and as I write this, I’m feeling the urgency of several intersecting timelines that simply have to come together in the next 10 weeks. But, I also know that the best way for me to balance them is to allow myself to step away, breathe and commit to moments of guilt-free, spontaneity.
“Some of the most thrilling things in life are done on impulse.” ~
Because I will go and go and go until whatever is on my plate is done. I will run myself ragged, burn the candle at both ends and drop my head on the pillow at night feeling totally exhausted and depleted…only to start the cycle all over again when my feet hit the floor.
Sometimes it takes someone else to show us the way. Someone who will remind us to go sit on the front porch and enjoy a good rain storm. A fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants kind of someone who snatches us away for an ice cream cone or an afternoon of right-hand turn destinations. Someone who knows the power of humor and a good laugh. Someone who values surprises and regularly loses track of time.
I need those kinds of people in my life because they recognize the importance of living in the moment.
Spontaneity lightens our burdens.
It breathes fresh air into our bones. It calms and slows the pounding drum of urgency we all face with our tasks and timelines.
Spontaneity opens the path for our soul to smile. Laugh. Release. Recharge.
It’s the surge of energy and motivation we need to be sprinkled in between the important and urgent.
Spontaneity is child-like wonder that steps out without asking why because to not would be to miss out on the very essence of unbridled joy.
Stopping by the playground to swing.
Saying “YES” when you want to say “NO.”
Budgeting for impulse purchases.
Picnicking and reading in the park.
Taking a “Heads or Tails” road trip.
Making time for a new Groupon adventure.
Grabbing a coloring book and crayons for lunch hour relaxation.
Indulging in a late-night food run with a friend.
Doing something that makes you smile.
Enjoying an unplanned “whatever you feel like” day.

Make spontaneity a priority. That’s the challenge I’m accepting this summer. In between the endless lists that accompany home renovations, event planning, packing, moving and a wedding.
The timeline will all ways be on the horizon and some of the best parts of the journey are unplanned and unexpected.
