Crayons! I love crayons!
From the time I can remember, crayons have been a treasured possession of mine. Like most children, many days were spent outlining, filling in, mixing colors and creating beautiful vibrant pages.
No restraints of time and no rules to hinder creativity. There were only simple moments of imagination where anything was possible.
Now, many years later, as my children are all grown and the last child will soon be leaving the nest, I find myself longing to get my crayons back.
Tracing my memories, I can’t remember when I tucked them away and forgot about them. Of course there were many opportunities for this creative expression with my own children, and sweet memories come to mind. However my tin of crayons found themselves slumbering, the truth remains that it is time to pull them back out and awaken my inner child.
Creative exercises have such huge benefits to the soul, yet they are often the first to be discarded when life’s agendas scream for our attention. The challenge sometimes is to fight the adult within who demands to participate with order and notions of what is and is not proper.
Creativity often begs for prompts, so see if some of these ideas begin to awaken your inner child:
Color outside the lines. It frees you to look beyond irrational boundaries and question limits you may have placed on yourself or allowed others to place on you. “The difficulty lies not so much in developing new ideas as in escaping from old ones.”- John Maynard Keynes
Scribble, and then scribble some more. It provides an avenue to vent and process feelings and emotions so you can become more aware of what may have been tucked away in the midst of a busy life. “You need chaos in your soul to give birth to a dancing star”- Nietzsche
Add to the empty space. It is there for a reason, calling you to exercise curiosity and see what happens when you dare to make something out of nothing. Go ahead, give it a try. No need to be afraid to make your mark! “The world is but a canvas to the imagination.”- Henry David Thoreau
Mix and match colors. There are no rules, and matching is not required. It is an opportunity to stretch the limits and explore the pallet of your imagination. Throw out monochromatic for this one! “If you hear a voice within you say, ‘You cannot paint,’ then by all means paint, and that voice will be silenced.”- Vincent van Gogh
Doodle patterns and designs. Right and wrong do not exist for the moment, so empty your mind of adult assumptions and make room for new ideas. Tap into your resourcefulness. “Creativity comes from trust. Trust your instincts”- Rita Mae Brown
Make time. No feelings of guilt are allowed. This time is important to opening up the mind, releasing tension and cultivating creativity. “Stillness is where creativity and solutions to problems are found”- Eckhart Tolle
Do you need a little kick-start to reconnect with your inner child. Is your imagination stagnant? Have you found the demands of life infringing on your ability to be inspired and cultivate your curiosity? Perhaps it is as simple as revisiting a simple childhood past time.
So, what is on my agenda for today? I’m going to upgrade. It’s been a long time since I have owned a box of 64 crayons!
