Many of us will be sending our kids off to school in the next couple of weeks. We’ll spend plenty of money, time and creativity to make sure everything is in place to set them up for a great school year. And after all the supplies have been purchased, organized, and labeled, we’ll start slaying the fear dragons and calming the anxiety butterflies that come with the first day.
We’ll reassure them of how far they’ve come and where they’re going. Each scribbled lunchbox reminder will encourage them to step out and believe in themselves, to make a friend, and trust that awkwardness will pass quickly. Through it all, we’ll go above and beyond to make sure they know they are seen, understood, and known. Because that’s what we do as parents.
And we’ll believe all the words we plant in their hearts. We’ll believe it for them.
But what about us? When the school bus door squeaks closed and we wave goodbye, do we believe these same truths for ourselves? Or do we need reminders also?
We all need reminders whispered into our own hearts that we have value…Remember who you are.
At the end of a long, hard day when we’re wondering how we ended up so far from where we wanted to be and we doubt if we have what it takes to finish strong, don’t we need someone to speak hope and strength to our soul?
We all need reminders that every part of our path is important…Remember where you are going.
When we feel as if we’re spinning our wheels, don’t we need reminders to point us toward our purpose? When we feel as if we’re traveling the longest road alone, don’t we need someone to come alongside us and give clarity to our path?
We all need reminders that we belong, we are loved, and we are known…Remember whose you are.

As we send our kids back to school, won’t you join me here throughout the month of August and spend some time soaking in the very truths we try so hard to pass along to our children? While we prepare them for a fruitful school year, let’s allow ourselves a few minutes each week to plant a rich harvest in our own hearts also.
One rich in reminders of our identity. One steeped in reminders of belonging. And one drenched in reminders of a purpose and a plan.
So, while we’re slipping sweet identity reminders into our kid’s lunchboxes, let’s not forget to slip some into our own hearts as well.
We are seen, we are understood, we are known.
