It’s so easy to race through life totally unaware of God’s perfect and timely protection. And then we experience a moment where the wake-up call is so loud and resonates so deeply that we fall to our knees and life must stop to allow gratitude to flow and God’s mercy to wash over our life anew. Because the glimpse of even one moment outside of God’s watchful eye is too devastating to consider.
My life stopped last week.
In the blink of an eye…a call that my son was in an accident on the highway, and it involved two semi-trucks. Immediately, fear and dread gripped my heart. A parent is never prepared for these calls, and I knew from my husband’s tone, it was serious.
But, as the events unfolded, it became evident that God’s profound protection was at work.
Pictures always tell a story, and to see the marks from a car spinning out of control, a crumbled highway wall from the impact, and my son’s car wedged well beneath a trailer bed is a stunning reminder of God working in the heavenly realm to secure him that day.
Our emotions have been raw for the past few days. Mercy waves hitting each of us in our quiet, reflective moments, leave behind the truth that God’s mercies are indeed new every morning.
As the waves retreat and this truth sinks beneath our heart walls, we know this steadfast love never turns away, never tires and never leaves us to fend for ourselves.
I watch this boy of mine, and I know it’s changed him. He contemplates. He sheds his private tears, and he lives within a layer of mercy he’s not known before. We all do.
We talk of each scenario. Of how the truck wasn’t carrying a load that day. How my son wasn’t driving his open Jeep which would have flipped. How the crumbled wall took the impact of the semi instead of his car. And how the rotation and angle of his car wedged beneath the truck bed left him unharmed and alive to walk away.
We talk because we need to wrap our heads around it. We need to take it all in and grasp this gift.
How can we grasp the fullness of God’s merciful protection until we’re faced with the reality of a life without it?
And, yet even in this moment of gratitude, the enemy lurks. In the middle of such goodness, he waits for the peace to settle in and then makes his move.
He plants seeds of doubt that maybe this was just a coincidence…but it’s not. Maybe God’s grace doesn’t abound in all things and at all times…but it does. He plants a fresh fear that maybe leaving two young adults behind to cross over 8 time zones to visit another is beyond the reach of His protection…but it isn’t.
How can we grasp the fullness of God's merciful protection until we're faced with the reality of a life without? Share on XSo here, the battle against fear begins again. It’s a war I’ve waged many times, yet there’s always an uneasy freshness, and this battle is no different.
It’s a battle we all must wage and one we can’t afford to lose.
We take heart because we know the enemy’s M.O. We know how to fight, how to wield the sword, and we know how to stand our ground and trust in truth.
Because even when we’re faced with a “blink of an eye” battle, we know God’s goodness is worth fighting for, and His promises of protection are worth hanging onto.
We know His mercies are new every morning…
not just for today, but for a lifetime.
