Hope is the password to a life of change and growth. Without it, we simply exist, relegated to the mundane and doomed to wander.
But how do we hang onto hope?
How do we keep hold and access all the power hope holds to transform our heart, our soul, our mind, our will?
When life bears down hard, how can we push hope to the surface and allow it to mold and shape us into who we’ve been created to be?
How can we inspire just a glimpse of hope when all we feel like doing is giving up?
It’s been said that hope changes everything, and I believe it does. But sometimes before the change comes, hope requires a little intention.
To live without Hope is to Cease to live. Share on XIn my line of work, I utilize passwords continually. Every electronic exam given to students is locked down until the students are given the secure password to enter. The fact that these passwords change constantly means that ongoing creative efforts have to be implemented.
Over the years, the passwords have evolved into messages and reminders and slogans. They sometimes mark events or holidays, and because I work in a faith-based environment, they often include scripture, faith topics, and character traits.
So, a few months ago, I decided to experiment with using passwords to help ground myself more deeply in hope.
Why?
Because life is hard and I’m forgetful. I forget to seek the hope that can change me and make me better, stronger and more faithful.
I forget to cling to the very gift of hope to shape and grow me into the best version of who I was created to be.
When fear grips my heart again, I forget to surrender to the One who has always been faithful to provide.

I don’t know about you, but I need constant reminders to choose hope. It doesn’t come naturally, and passwords have been a surprisingly successful tool to refocus my attention and remind me of all that God has for me in this life…now.
As we allow our heart to be shaped, we grow. As we grow through our passwords, they secure a change in us.
Our inner self is renewed, over and over again…
and hope remains alive.
So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day.” 2 Corinthians 4:16
