I’ve been thinking a lot about dreams and detours lately. Particularly the ones I’ve longed for through more days of this life than I can count. The one’s that make me lose sleep at night because the wanting is desperate and real and so tangible the very thought takes my breath away. The ones that rack my brain with questioning and leave my heart doubting with the tick-tock of every year of living.
Wondering if in all the waiting is going to count for anything.
In this crazy, busy, chaotic life, we can often end up nurturing a dream for so long, we begin to think it’s never going to be anything more than just a deep longing. Especially when life happens, and detours seem to draw us further and further from our intended destination.
We become overwhelmed by where we are, and the energy to keep hoping requires more than we have to give. Choosing to settle for less seems like a better option than striving for more, especially when detours push more beyond our reach.
During the times of seemingly endless wandering and waiting, God is always calling us to more. Share on XOften, yielding to timing that is not our own is the first step. Shifting our thinking from waiting to anticipating is the difference between giving up and giving in. Because giving in opens us up to a vision greater than our own.
Giving in allows our detours to become a missing piece instead of a mistake.
And the missing piece becomes the tender whisper from the One who planted the dream before we took our first breath. The whisper that assures us we have not been forgotten or overlooked or traded in for a better model. The whisper that cradles our dream and promises to cultivate it in richer, fertile soil only accessed through the detour.
Your eyes saw me when I was formless; all my days were written in Your book and planned before a single one of them began. ~Psalm 139:16
We realize we’re not really putting our dream on hold as much as we are allowing it to take root…through the detours. So in this rooting, we will find strength and tenacity and focus needed to support the blooming and expansion of the dream. And the impact of that dream will reach further than all the wandering and waiting.
Making us realize perhaps the detour isn’t a detour after all. Maybe it’s simply the road less traveled.
And what if the detour leads us to our destiny? A destination far greater than the sum of all our dreams. What if the detour leads us to the legacy God had planned for us all along? Because His dream is bigger than the seed He planted in our heart. And maybe He is just waiting for us to give in instead of give up.
Maybe He’s waiting for us to embrace the detours and release the wandering and the wondering so the work can really begin…Maybe He’s waiting for us to get to the end of our dream to make room for His. So our horizon can be expanded, and our notions of what should be are released for what can be. And all of those beautiful pieces joined together finally come into focus for the masterful creation growing inside us all along.
What seems like wandering to us is often preparing and seasoning and grooming us for the launch of a dream larger than ourselves. One He breathes air into so when it takes flight, it carries us closer to Him instead of us.
And then we realize, the dream was never really about us~
