I remember when my somedays were nothing more than a whisper, escaping lips in weary moments of diapers, dinners and drowsy, late night chores. For years they lay tucked beneath the layers of an all-consuming, “playing catch-up” life.
But last night, as I began packing the first boxes of a home lived in for 22 years, all I wanted to hang onto were the yesterdays. Those long-awaiting somedays melted into the yearning for just one more yesterday. One more yesterday of little ones toddling from one toy to the next and sleepy eyes needing comforting from scary dreams. One more yesterday of sleepovers, pool parties and after-school play dates.
We rarely savor our yesterdays fully until we’re thrust into the changes of today. Share on XLife is chocked full of changes. Some large, some small. But each change summons a new season of life. And each season offers a life-breathing opportunity for a fresh someday.
Last week we looked at silencing the fears, comparisons, and doubts that stand in the way of us realizing our somedays. But what do we do when we’ve slain the dragons of fear and broken the comparison yardstick over our knee once and for all? What do we do when the thing we’ve dreamed of for so long now is just a shadow of a thought?
How do we dust off the remnants of a dream and bring it to life today?
I’ve been asking myself these questions. Because life is too short and too precious to allow our somedays to die a slow, neglected death. They deserve to be revived. If for no other reason than to say we tried.
Maybe it’s time for a little Someday CPR.
The kind that summons life where there once was death.
The kind that demands attention.
And the kind that requires action regardless of whether we succeed or fail.
Check the Scene
If I look around me throughout my day, I can identify people and things that are sucking the life out of my someday. We all can. From those we allow to monopolize too many of our moments to endless To-Do lists and time wasters claiming every valuable moment of a day. And then there’s the abundance of sticky-note ideas plastered in notebooks or piled one atop the other and paperclipped together for safe someday keeping. All leaving our hopes and dreams quietly suffocating without a hint of notice or a squeak of air to penetrate the chaos.
Take Your Vitals
No matter how many brain cells I expend wishing or thinking about my hopes and dreams, I won’t get very far if I’m not willing to assess my mental, emotional and physical condition as it pertains to moving forward and realizing my someday. The same is true for all of us. We do ourselves a huge favor by taking the time to figure out where our weak spots are. Where our strength lies and what areas need attending to most.
How can we ever embrace the dream God’s tucked in our soul if we’re not willing to look at the state of our heart?
It’s reasonable to expect our heart may need a little CPR once in a while. Life is hard, and it wears heavy on our emotions. Maybe our heart needs tending. Perhaps our faith needs deeper rooting. Perhaps we need to take some time to deal with these matters of the heart before we can truly exhale and begin breathing fresh air once again.
Seek Assistance
None of us make it through this life without help from another. Surrounding ourselves with people who are able and willing to support us through the process of breathing life into our hopes and dreams is both crucial and valuable. We need people who believe in us and our someday. People with staying power who have the capacity to challenge and point us toward the goal when we can’t see the path ahead. People who understand the value of investing in a life today for the hope of tomorrow.
Open Your Airways
I don’t know about you, but I’m learning the value of slow, deep, intentional breathing. When I need to slow down. When I’m faced with a problem or when my emotions threaten to get the best of me. I’m learning the value of removing those things which obstruct me from breathing deeply and regaining a sense of calm. A sense of hope. And I’m realizing that by making space for soul cleansing I’m creating space for my somedays to take shape.
What’s obstructing the airways and need to be cleared away to make space for your someday to breathe?
Making space for soul cleansing is creating space for somedays to take shape. Share on XMaintain Constant Care
Packing up my home after 22 years to relocate is reminding me of the importance of constant care. I’m grateful for the choices to maintain through the years. The painting and sorting and remodeling. All the things required for the proper upkeep of home have brought their own reward, but they’ve also made the dream of selling quickly a reality.
Our someday’s need constant care if we are going to ensure they thrive and remain strong through the ebb and flow of a changing life. Constant care looks different for each of us. But the one thing that doesn’t change is the fact that it is a necessity. Not just for us, but for the sake of our future and the future of those we love who will follow in our footsteps….our legacy…
to one day, realize their own someday.
